July 12, 2006
Dear Bobcat Fans,
I hope this column finds each of you having a great summer. There are only 25 days until our football team reports to campus to begin preseason camp! While the past few months have gone by very quickly, I find myself already looking forward to the fall when the cross country, field hockey, football, soccer and volleyball seasons begin!
MISSION STATEMENT
Over the past few months, members of our administrative staff, coaching staff and the members of the Student-Athlete Advisory Board have participated in brainstorming sessions in an effort to draft a new mission statement for our department. I want to thank each participant for their valuable input, time and leadership throughout this process. Our overall goal was to develop a statement that aligns each of our daily responsibilities with the ultimate goal of serving our 537 student-athletes. I can say with confidence that our goal has been accomplished! I will put our mission statement up against any other in Division I-A Athletics:
"The mission of Ohio Intercollegiate Athletics is to inspire, develop and support students in their pursuit of academic and athletic excellence."
Each and every day members of the athletics staff focus on inspiring, or affecting our student-athletes in a positive way. We all look to develop our student-athletes, or assist them in growing in some way; to make them stronger or more effective in what they do. Additionally, we support them in all that they do; through coaching or guidance, we try to give them confidence and courage to do what is right while achieve their academic and athletic aspirations.
ACADEMIC EXCELLENCE
Our student-athletes continue to perform exceptionally well in the classroom. I am excited to communicate to you that, at the close of Spring Quarter, our student-athletes have accomplished the following outstanding achievements:
We are very proud of these accomplishments and of our student-athletes who continue to focus on their academic pursuits!
PEDEN TOWER RENOVATION
Last summer, with the help of a number of gifts made to the department, we were able to complete Phase I of the Peden Tower Renovation. We can now make available a state-of-the-art athletic training suite, complete with hydrotherapy pools and a Bio-Dex rehabilitation machine. Individual meeting rooms, as well as an all-team meeting space has been created and has already been put to great use by the entire athletics department.
Now, this summer, we are in the middle of Phase II and the changes are dramatic! As you know, work on the 5th Floor has begun and continues to progress in a timely fashion. I took a walk through the project just last week and the new layout is definitely starting to take form. Tile and ceiling work are both scheduled to begin this week. Once completed, this project will be a point of pride for our department and once again, set a standard of excellence within our program.
On behalf of our student-athletes, coaches and staff, thank you for your continued support of Ohio Athletics. We look forward to seeing you this fall!
Go Bobcats!
Kirby
