Bobcat Fans,
It's a great time to be a Bobcat! What a great start to the 2006-2007 academic year. Bobcat teams have been crowned Mid-American Conference champions THREE TIMES already this season and our football team has won the Mid-American Conference East Division championship!
A few days ago as I began to write this column, I thought back to September 7, the date of our inaugural all student-athlete meeting. More than 500 student-athletes gathered in the Convocation Center to hear two guest speakers. With our recent successes, I think it is appropriate to share a part of that meeting with you.
The first speaker addressed three important topics: tradition, team, and titles. He encouraged each student to familiarize themselves with the tradition of their respective sports program. During his time as a student-athlete, Ohio built upon and further enhanced a tradition of athletic excellence. He spoke to the group about the importance of Team. In short, his message was that while individual performance could win a game, it requires a team to win a championship. Lastly, he discussed Titles. He claimed that this year would be the year for the Bobcats to bring home some championship trophies. As he departed, our student-athletes gave him a standing ovation.
Were our student-athletes listening to that speaker? You decide!

I believe our student-athletes WERE listening to the speaker that evening. I also believe that his words are still ringing in their ears as our fall sports continue to compete and the winter sports get under way. Bobcat student-athletes have been achieving in the classroom as well as in competition, and we can all share in the sense of pride created by these teams' successes.
I think I will invite this speaker back to next year's all student-athlete meeting. So if you see him around campus or at an athletics event, you might want to thank President Roderick McDavis for the inspirational speech he gave to your Ohio Bobcats!
I wish you a happy holiday season, and I hope you will have time to read the next installment of Kirby's Column in January.
Go Bobcats!
- Kirby
